Digital Witness was born from a fundamental need for transparency in democracy. Our story began during the 2019 Guatemalan elections, where we witnessed firsthand the challenges of electoral integrity—discrepancies in tally sheets, inconsistent results, and a growing public distrust in the system. It was a moment that made us ask: What if technology could bridge the gap between transparency and trust?
Determined to find a solution, we started experimenting with crowdsourced digitalization and independent verification, laying the foundation for what would later become our real-time audit platform. The road wasn’t easy—building a system that could process electoral data at scale, ensure accuracy, and provide immutable proof of authenticity required relentless innovation and an unwavering commitment to the truth.
By the 2023 Guatemalan elections, our vision became reality. We deployed our real-time document processing and audit system, enabling the verification of thousands of tally sheets and poll tapes with unprecedented speed and accuracy. For the first time, election results could be independently validated as they were reported, empowering organizations, journalists, and civil society with the tools to hold the process accountable.
